Hotel Corps de Garde, your historic boutique hotel in Groningen

Hotel Corps de Garde is an authentic boutique hotel with a rich history that we cherish. It’s a place where stories have left their mark over time and are still palpable today, but with a modern and colorful twist. It’s here that you truly feel what it’s like to live in the moment, to let go of the passage of time for a while.

The building was constructed in 1634, serving as a guardhouse for soldiers and city guards who protected the northern border of the city. In 1836, it ceased to function as the main guardhouse and became part of a new agricultural museum. Subsequently, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen took up residence in the premises.

Our Story

Hotel Corps de Garde is an authentic boutique hotel with a rich history that we cherish. It’s a place where stories have left their mark over time and are still palpable today, but with a modern and colorful twist. It’s here that you truly feel what it’s like to live in the moment, to let go of the passage of time for a while.

The building was constructed in 1634 as a guardhouse for soldiers and city guards who protected the northern border of the city. In 1836, the building lost its function as the main guard post and became part of a new agricultural museum. Later, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen took up residence in the building. Where Brasserie Corps is now located, young preachers were trained to impart their agricultural knowledge to farmers.

In 1903, it housed the astronomical laboratory, and from 1934 to 1944, the University Museum. In 1989, the university sold the building to Joke Velthoven, who established Auberge Corps de Guarde there in 1991. The centuries-old building was given a new purpose: it became a hotel. The name was later changed to Corps de Garde.

In 2021, the hotel was lovingly renovated by Garde Hotels. Hotel Corps de Garde is now a modern, fresh, and colorful hotel, but thanks to the many classic elements that have been kept, its rich history is still noticeable.
