Our Story

As soon as you step onto the Oude Boteringestraat in Groningen, you can feel the city’s rich history. This is where Professor Tjalling Joostes Halbertsma lived, a professor who shared his passion for art, culture, and ancient Greece with students from both the Netherlands and abroad. His jovial and welcoming nature made him beloved, not only at the university but also on the street where he lived.

Halbertsma added a splash of color to the streetscape with his rosy cheeks and blond curls. He enjoyed traveling and meeting new people, but always returned to his city, his family, and his home at the Oude Boteringestraat. There, he found inspiration in nature and in spending time with friends and loved ones.

In 1900, the house underwent a major renovation, with his grandson laying the cornerstone. The building evolved into a place where old and new come together and where Halbertsma’s stories remain noticeable. In 2023, the building was thoroughly renovated and reopened as Hotel Halbert, honoring its heritage while looking toward the future.

Today, at Hotel Halbert, you’ll experience the same warmth and inspiration that Halbertsma embodied. Whether you’re relaxing in the Kas, gazing up at the historic facade, or simply enjoying the hospitality, this is where stories, encounters, and the best of Groningen come together.
